Match Report

Lochar Thistle who are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year lifted the John Pagan and Son sponsored League Cup on Friday night, winning 5-4 on penalty kicks against Upper Annandale. A fair sized crowd watched the match, which was played in driving rain at the David Keswick Centre where the pitch stood up to the poor weather conditions in an what proved to be an exciting final.

Uppers started  the match much the brighter of the two teams and created several chances early on with both Neil Roddick and Mark Leighfield  going close with headers. Ross Dawson then had a shot cleared off the line by Lochar midfielder Murray Haining. Lochar slowly but surely took control with a neat midfield passing game and started to create chances of their own. In the 15th minute James Rogerson hit the side netting after a neat turn and shot. Fellow striker John Howie managed to slip his marker at the edge of the box but failed to get a shot away. Uppers did have the occasional break during this spell and it was on one of these that Uppers took the lead in the 30th minute. Ryan Johnstone  finishing well after leaving the Lochar defence standing with a strong run and shot. Lochar kept the pressure on and could have had a couple goals before half time. John Howie the player with both chances, with the first he failed to capitalise when he turned the defence and the with the second, Uppers keeper Jamie Carlyle saved well. Lochar however, did finish the half on level terms. In the 44th minute a shot from just inside the box by Craig Jones hit the crossbar and dropped onto the goal-line where an Uppers defender under pressure from Michael McGauchie  put the ball over the line for an own goal.

The second half started just as the first had finished with Lochar in attack with Rogerson going close twice in quick succession. A brave block by an Uppers defender and a good save from keeper Carlyle kept the scores level.  Uppers assumed control soon after this and from then until the end of the match they pinned Lochar back in their own half. The Moffat team had a good penalty claim turned down by referee Ian Brack when Grant Watson was pulled back in the box as he was shaping up for a shot after a neat turn saw him lose his marker. In the 60th minute striker Neil Roddick had a shot well saved by Lochar keeper Alan Gordon who also parried a Roddy Carlyle header past the post a few minutes later. The best move of the match saw Uppers take the lead for the first time. A neat interchange in the midfield area saw the ball switched wide to Ryan Johnstone who ran through and slipped the ball past the keeper. Roddick went close again in the 70th minute with Gordon in the Lochar goal not for the first time saving well in difficult conditions.  Uppers maintained the pressure and looked to have won the trophy but Lochar had time for one last break. Michael McGauchie picked the ball up 40 yards out and drove into the box where he was brought down. He picked himself up to take the resultant penalty and calmly sent the keeper the wrong way to draw the scores level.  Both teams pushed for a winner in the final seconds but the scores remained level at two apiece as the referee blew for the end of the 90 minutes.

Due to the poor conditions underfoot the referee made the decision not to play extra-time and the game went straight to penalties. Both teams missed two of their five allotted penalties to take the shootout to sudden death. Each of the teams scored to level at four each before Steven Couper put Lochar ahead again. Keeper Jamie Carlyle who saved two of the earlier spot kicks was next up for Uppers  but his opposite number Alan Gordon saved well to give Lochar the victory.

In summary both teams had their chances in this match and each had long periods of ascendency during which they failed to turn their dominance into goals. Penalty kicks are always a bit of a lottery and again both teams had their chances to secure victory. In the end Lochar held their nerve and deserved their victory as a result of that. Thanks must go to the staff at the David Keswick Centre who helped to get the match played and also to the officials who did well in difficult conditions.

After the match the cup was presented to Lochar Thistle captain Brian Nish by Kenny Hope who represented the sponsor funeral directors John Pagan and Son. Man of the Match honours went to Ryan Johnstone of Upper Annandale who scored both of his team’s goals and who had an excellent match wide on the right.
