Star Cause Cup Upset as they Lift the Queen of the South Cup

QOS Cup Winners FC Dynamo Star after defeating Maxwelltown Thistle in the QoS Cup

Match Report

FC Dynamo Star created a bit of a cup upset on Wednesday night  when they defeated Maxwelltown Thistle 3-0 in the final of the Queen of the South Cup at Palmerston . Star, in their first season in the DDAFL after moving from the Sunday League have been improving steadily over the past few months and showed with this win that their semi-final win at Moffat was no fluke.

Star’s cause was not helped when they lost influential midfielder Gordon Tennant who suffered a nasty knee ligament injury in the second minute. Maxwelltown, last year’s runners-up started much the brighter and in general tried to dictate the play and went close several times in the first 20 minutes. In the 15th minute Ross Halliday blasted a shot over the bar from 15 yards out and Sean Kearney’s cute header nearly caught Star keeper Grant Ireland out a few minutes later.  In the 25th minute the best move of the match saw James Smith find Sean Kearney in the clear the box with but the normally reliable striker mis-controlled and the chance was gone. Up to this point Star had defended well and showed some enterprise in midfield but failed to test Thistle keeper Duncan Purdie.

The turning point in the match came in the 30th minute when Thistle were reduced to ten men as a result of poor discipline from feiry midfielder Mark Montgomery.  The extra man in midfield helped Star and they came into the game much more, although Maxwelltown still tried to dictate play their play in general was a bit one dimensional.  Star then got the breakthrough they wanted in the 44th minute when Russell Milligan profited from a defensive slip and ran through to slot the ball past the onrushing Purdie.

The second half started with a rejuvenated Maxwelltown pushing forward in an attempt to get the all important equaliser but Star’s defence held firm with both Guy Archibald and Paul Madden looking solid. Thistle striker Graeme Carling also raised his game but Thistle’s best chance fell to Halliday whose low shot beat Star keeper Ireland but was saved on the line by Archibald. in the 55th minute, somewhat against the run of play at the time Star sealed their victory when Thistle defender McQuarrie tried to play offside and was punished when Star striker James Boyd ran through to finish well on the break. The game was well and truly over for Thistle two minutes later this time a cross come shot from Boyd was deflected past his keeper by Hallday.

Maxwelltown rang the changes and kept pushing for a consolation goal. Star, however had grown in confidence and used their extra man to good effect with Kirk Tweedie in particular picking the loose balls up in midfield.  Ireland in goals made several good saves and the Dynamo defence still had work on their hands as Thistle never gave up until the ninety minutes were up. Overall Star deserved their victory, mainly as s result of their resolute defensive display. The sending off certainly swung the game in their favour but there were no complaints from the Thistle camp at the final whistle.

The match was well officiated and very few decisions were contested. Referee Davie Laurie and Assistants Jim Thomson and Billy Dewar-Riddick can be well pleased with their nights work. On the night Paul Madden, Guy Archibald and Kirk Tweedie caught the eye for Star while Tommy Jardine, Keiren Smith and Graeme Carling were best for Thistle.

After the match Eric Moffat of Queen of the South assisted by Maurice Sproat presented the trophies to both sets of players and match officials. The man of the match award, picked by the match officials went to Star defender Paul Madden. The league committee would to thank Queen of the South for the use of Palmerston and in particular the staff in attendance on the night.
